Backbencher

“Backbencher” is a political radio drama about a woman from a small Nova Scotia community who runs for the NDP on a whim, and is surprised when she gets elected. The drama offers a view from the backbenches of the House of Commons; one woman’s journey through the snake pit of Canadian politics.

Eight episodes air Thursdays 11.30 a.m. and 11.05 p.m. on CBC Radio One through May 27. The series was produced at CBC Halifax by Peggy Hemsworth. Further information is available here.

The Corridor

King of Thieves and Peter Pan

According to the Stratford Festival website, Nigel is giving his Stratford debut, appearing in two plays during the 2010 season.

“King of Thieves” by George F. Walker runs from July 18 to September 18, 2010 and “Peter Pan” runs from April 16 to October 31.

Darwin’s Darkest Hour

Filmed in Nova Scotia in June, “Darwin’s Darkest Hour” tells the remarkable story behind the unveiling of the most influential scientific theory of all time, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. The two-hour drama focuses on the period just before the publication of his book “On the Origin of Species”.

The program is a special presentation from NOVA and National Geographic Television, written by acclaimed British screenwriter John Goldsmith and directed by John Bradshaw.

Nigel plays geologist Sir Charles Lyell, who was a close friend to Darwin and who encouraged him to publish “On the Origin of Species”.

That Face

Nigel will be on stage playing Hugh in the Canadian premiere of “That Face”, written by UK dramatist Polly Stenham.

The play offers a searing portrait of an upper class family, exposes an oedipal web between mother and son, examines mental illness, addiction and emotional deprivation and reveals the secrets hidden within the walls of private schools and the jet set crowd.

“That Face” is produced by Nightwood Theatre, Toronto in cooperation with the Canadian Stage Company and runs at the Berkeley Street Theatre in Toronto October 26 to November 21, 2009.

Heart to Heart

Nigel will be on stage in “Heart to Heart”, the season opener of the Summer Theatre Festival in Chester, Nova Scotia.

“Heart to Heart” is a new romantic comedy, written by Felix Medina, that explores the lighter side of romance and relationships. Nigel Bennett and Lally Cadeau portray 10 characters in a quintet of comedies, including a pair of siblings, best friends and married, divorcing and dating couples who debate, define and stumble upon the true nature of love. Theatrically brilliant, “Heart to Heart” is created for the audience to witness the magic of theatre as actors perform the scenery changes as action shifts to the next story - all written as part of the performance.

“Heart to Heart” runs from July 22 to August 1, 2009 at the Chester Playhouse.

Short Film Faceoff - Season 2

Nigel will return as panelist for the second season of CBC’s “Short Film Faceoff”.

Nine short films by filmmakers across Atlantic Canada will be screened during three episodes. Each night, a panel of judges will question the filmmakers about their productions and pick a favourite. Hosted by Matt Rainnie, the one-hour program is set to air June 13, 20, and 27 from 10 to 11 p.m.

Films from each episode will be available for viewing online any time here.

The television audience will have a chance to participate by casting votes for their favourite short film online at ww.cbc.ca/shortfilmfaceoff. Voting starts on June 27 following the program at 11 p.m.

The winning filmmaker will be announced on July 4 and receives a CBC production deal towards their next film.

Medea

Nigel will be playing Creon, king of Corinth in Manitoba Theatre Centre’s production of “Medea”. Written by Euripides, this ancient Greek tragedy centers on the myth of Jason, leader of the Argonauts, who has won the dragon-guarded treasure of the Golden Fleece with the help of the sorceress Medea. Having married Medea and fathered her two children, Jason abandons her for a more favorable match, never suspecting the terrible revenge she will take.

The play opens on November 20th and runs through December 13th. In January and February 2009, the production is scheduled to move to the Canon Theatre in Toronto (Jan 9 - Feb 8 ).

Eternal Kiss

Back into the genre, but on the other side: Nigel is playing vampire hunter Dr. Simon Polidori in the feature film “Eternal Kiss”.

Written, produced and directed by Paul Kimball, “Eternal Kiss” tells the story of David Manners, a thirty-something filmmaker from the small seaside town of Harker’s Cove who gets more than he bargained for when he sets out to make a documentary about people who believe in the existence of vampires… and finds himself the target of media mogul Elisabeth Langstrom, a very real vampire who is convinced that David is her soul-mate.

Production is scheduled to wrap up this week. Release is planned for summer 2009.
